China Seeks Fairer World Order

Amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a rejection of hegemonic power structures in global governance on Tuesday. Xi criticized efforts by some countries to “build barriers” and “decouple”, which he said would harm others and benefit no one.

 

Progress in Nuclear Talks

Iran and world powers have made some progress on the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iranian officials said on Monday, an interim deal could be a way to gain time for a lasting settlement.

 

Arab League, UN Partnership

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called on the Security Council and other UN bodies to establish a strategic working partnership with the league and its member states. The aim, he said, would be to lay the foundations for “security, stability and sustainable development in the Arab region."

 

Free Palestinian Elections

The British government has called on Israel to ensure free and fair Palestinian elections take place in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The British Consulate in Jerusalem tweeted, “Palestinian voters want free, fair and inclusive elections [...]"

 

GERD Negotiations

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohammed Abdel-Ati said Ethiopia has rejected 15 different suggestions by Egypt to help resolve a conflict over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile.
