US Sanctions Russia 


The United States imposed a broad array of sanctions on Russia on Thursday for interfering in last year’s US election, cyber hacking, bullying Ukraine and other alleged actions. The moves are the most significant US sanctions in years. The US warned Russia that more penalties were possible but said it did not want to escalate.

 

Turkey, Egypt to Restore Ties 


Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that a delegation would visit Egypt in the first week of May as part of an effort to normalize ties between the two countries. While speaking to a Turkish national broadcaster, Cavusoglu highlighted the significance of Egypt and its role in the region.

 

Blinken Visits Afghanistan


Only a day after US President Joe Biden announced the withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan by September 11, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul on Thursday. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the surprise visit was to “affirm the United States’ continued commitment to Afghanistan.”

 

Drug Shortage Amid Pandemic 


After weeks of warnings that hospitals risked running out of critical medicines, reports have emerged of Brazilian health workers forced to intubate patients without the aid of sedatives. Lack of required medicines is the latest pandemic problem for Brazil, which is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases that have flooded its intensive care units.
