US-China First Call
US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had their first telephone conversation as leaders. Biden expressed his concerns over Beijing's actions in Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Taiwan, the White House reported. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi told Biden that confrontation would be a “disaster” and that both sides should re-establish the means to avoid misjudgments.

 

Qatar to Return to Nuclear Deal
Qatar is planning to rejoin the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said, "The State of Qatar is working on de-escalation through a political and diplomatic process to return to the nuclear agreement,” state media reported.

 

Iran Produces Uranium Metal
Iran has produced uranium metal. An act Western powers had warned against, considering it a breach of the 2015 nuclear deal, as the material can be used to construct a nuclear weapon. The step will possibly complicate efforts to bring the US back into the agreement.

 

Myanmar Sanctioned
The US will be imposing sanctions on the Myanmar military leaders who directed the coup, their business interests, and close family members. Washington has cut off Myanmar generals' access to $1 billion in Burmese government funds held in the United States. Biden also called for the release of the detained leaders.
