After Arrest, Navalny in Court 

A day after his arrest upon arriving at Moscow airport, Alexei Navalny was taken to a court hearing inside a police station on Monday. In a video, Navalny lashed out at Russian President Vladimir Putin. The opposition leader may face up to three and a half years in jail due to alleged violations of a suspended prison sentence.

 

Samsung Vice Chairman Sentenced 

Samsung Electronics vice chairman Jay Y. Lee was sentenced to two and a half years in jail by the Seoul High Court on Monday. He was found guilty of bribery, embezzlement, and concealment of criminal proceeds worth billions. Lee had previously served one year in prison for bribery charges.

 

China to Sanction US Officials

Days after the United States lifted restrictions on contracts with Taiwanese officials, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said some US officials who have been involved in the Taiwan issue would face sanctions. US-Chinese relations have worsened in the final days of Donald Trump's presidency.

 

Sulawesi Death Toll Rises 

According to the search and rescue agency "Basarnas", the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the Indonesian Sulawesi island last week, has killed at least 84 and displaced more than 30,000. 

The earthquake has been followed by more than 39 aftershocks and has caused significant damage.
