Indonesia Plane Crash

Just four minutes after taking off from Jakarta, the Indonesian Sriwijaya Air jet, with 62 people on board, crashed into the sea. Authorities identified the location of two of the jet's black boxes on Sunday. Pieces of wreckage and human body parts were also retrieved.

 

US-Taiwan Relationship

In the last days of Donald Trump's presidency, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated he is lifting restrictions on interactions between US and Taiwanese officials. The move will most likely escalate tensions between Beijing and Washington, as Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in China's relationship with the US.

 

Hong Kong Arrests Condemned

In a joint statement on Sunday, Foreign Ministers of the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia condemned the arrest of dozens of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong last week. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington may impose sanctions on those involved in the arrests.

 

Cuba COVID-19 Restrictions

Cuba’s large gatherings over year-end, with diaspora who have returned to visit the country, have spiked coronavirus infection records. Cuban top epidemiologist Francisco Duran warned of legal measures to prevent the spread of the disease. At the same time, authorities in the capital have tightened lockdown restrictions.
